Letter from Christina from The Christina Noble Children's Foundation
Greetings from Christina,
How hard it can be at times, to adequately convey in words just how very grateful I am to MCD and especially Caroline Downey for the kindness, belief, compassion and understanding illustrated through the incredible dedication and support shown by Caroline during the past years.
Many of the thousands of street and destitute children I have worked with in Vietnam and Mongolia over the years lead heroic lives. I established my Foundation in 1989 and to date we have implemented in access of 100 lifesaving projects helping over 400,000 destitute children. Most of these children parent younger siblings even as they desperately seek to survive themselves in a hostile world. They eek out a living to put food in the mouths of brothers, sisters and other children. They are amazingly successful at what they do. What they are forced to do is far removed from what a child should be asked to do in a decent world. The plight of children worldwide tells us that something seems to have gone terribly wrong with civilisation. All around our world, millions of children are abandoned, starving, homeless, abducted, abused, neglected, and trafficked into the sex industry and used as slave labour. The future of the world is the future of “our” children….. For many of them, it is a matter of giving them back their future, giving them a life, giving them hope.
The Christina Noble Children’s Foundation believes with a passion that every child in the world rich or poor has a right to enjoy a childhood. The world is peopled with millions of beautiful children, some loved and cherished, but many, many more who are not. My own background of childhood pain and betrayal and the loneliness of living on the streets of Dublin in absolute poverty, created in me a deep compassion for children who are neglected, homeless and without hope. My inspiration is the fact that as a child I managed to survive. And despite that harsh experience, I formed a belief that each and everyone of us can make a difference. There are those who think the task so great, so overwhelming that nothing can be done. But were we to lose our optimism none of us who work in the field could carry on. The rewards come each time we see that a difference has been made for just one child, that child whose life is turned around might just be the “yeast” that, over time, activates regeneration in a family, a community, a country, AND INDEED THE WORLD.
Our children are our most precious assets, our most precious resource – our little people, our children – the adults, the parents, the LEADERS OF TOMORROW.
As base a thing as money often is, it can be transformed into every lasting treasure. The generosity of your support, your friendship and unfeigned sincerity and care at MCD and the tireless work of Caroline Downey are helping us with the vital task of ‘converting’, ‘giving’, into food for the hungry, and clothing for the poor.
Giving can send a child to school providing them with the option in life to choose which direction they wish to pursue, and reach their full potential. It provides life changing medical care for very sick children, visually impaired children, and thus every lasting hope for a family, who fears the anguish and pain or even loss of their child. Thus “giving, can transform itself by the power of humanity into a priceless value. Let us never forget that it is the human contribution that is the essential ingredient in helping others.”
Thank you Caroline and all of the wonderful people at MCD so very much for sharing this journey with us, without the support of people such as yourselves the Christina Noble Children’s Foundation could not have achieved and continue to achieve, saving and mending the lives of so many and giving back the children their childhood and hope for a better future in conditions of freedom and dignity and hope for a brighter, safer world and thus changing the cycle of poverty that has hindered them for so very long.
